The single cylinder shock absorber has a simpler structure and reduces the number of valve systems. It is equipped with a floating piston in the lower part of the cylinder, (the so-called floating piston means that there is no piston rod to control its movement), forming a closed air chamber under the floating piston, filled with high-pressure nitrogen. The above changes in level caused by the flow of the piston rod into and out of the oil are automatically accommodated by the movement of the floating piston. In addition to the two above mentioned shock absorbers, there are drag adjustable shock absorbers. It can be operated externally to change the size of the throttle orifice. In recent cars, electronically controlled shock absorbers are standard equipment. Sensors detect driving conditions and computers calculate the optimal damping force, making the damping force adjustment mechanism on the shock absorbers work automatically.
